Social practices in art
Contemporary artists, ink masters and tattooed individuals, artworks and figures of the past come together in a suggestive journey that explores the social, cultural and artistic use of body art. This must-see exhibition at MAO encompasses the entire tattoo universe including tools from Asia and Australia, historic photos of 19th century Japan and New Zealand’s Maoris, prints by well-known Japanese artist Kuniyoshi Utagawa who published a print series in 1827 that became an iconographic reference for tattoos, plus drawings and objects from the Cesare Lombroso Museum of Criminal Anthropology and Turin’s Museum of Anatomy. The exhibition ends with the protagonists of contemporary art who use tattoos as a form of self-expression.
