Exhibition: ‘Vesperbild. Alle origini delle Pietà di Michelangelo’
About the exhibition
Spread over three sections, the exhibition tells the story of Vesperbild (in Italian known as “Pietà”) through two centuries, from the 14th-century wooden sculptures of the Rhine valley up to Michelangelo’s Pietà Vaticana. The exhibition, hosted in the Sale dell’Antico Ospedale Spagnolo, gathers 24 masterpieces that span from the early examples of vesperbild (image of vesper, literally) coming from northern Europe up to Michelangelo’s creations. The works on display include sculptures, drawings, paintings, engravings and miniatures resulting from loans by important international institutions which include the Musée du Louvre, the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Liebieghaus in Frankfurt, as well Italian and Milanese institutions which include the Biblioteca Trivulziana and the Museo Poldi Pezzoli.
