An Italian shipwrecked and kidnapped in Algiers. This is the story (thought to have been inspired by a real-life event) that Gioachino Rossini used to express the idea of ‘Turkishness’ in his music. Rossini made extensive use of janissary percussion including cymbals, triangles, bass-drum, military glockenspiel and bells, often referred to as the ‘Gran Banda Turca’. The opera was a huge success.
